The Kitchen
As I think about living sustainably on our farm and lowering costs one consistently high bill comes to mind, the groceries. It seems no matter how much I try to limit the spend, to budget and to only buy what's on my list the bill always seems to be on the high side. So with this in mind, my aim when living on the farm is to reduce our grocery bill.
I have certain things planned already to acheive this goal, the first is my large walk in pantry, perfect for buying in bulk, well, the staples such as flour, sugar etc at least.
The second, buy a beast (and a freezer big enough for it) that way at least the meat bill at the supermarket will be drastically reduced. Of course buying a beast means I may need to get into a few other things...sausage making for one.
Thirdly, grow my own vegetables and fruit. Of course this could take a while to establish but we have the room for a decent size vegetable patch and orchard and my aim is to only have plants in the garden that serve a function (translation - that can be eaten!).
Lastly, I've taken a look at the things I buy at the supermarket with a particular question in mind "Can I make this myself?" and you'd be surprised, the answer is usually yes!
So this portion of the website is going to document my trials and successes (I hope!) with the aim of reducing my grocery bill in mind. I have grand plans - pasta making, sausage making, cheese making, preserving and all that goes with it as well as my 'make it myself' experiences. All of the above have never been done by me before so it should definitely be an experience!!
In order to keep some order - I'll be splitting my various experences and recipes into different blog pages - just in case you want to come back and find something quickly.
